Is there any kind of collectability to black/death metal tapes? I don't mean demos, I mean early 90s stuff from Roadrunner, Century Media, JL, Earache, etc.

I have a friend who wants to get rid of some and has no idea what they're worth. If anything.

Right, it has nothing to do with it being an inferior format, it's because people are lazy.

I sold some tapes for a rather large sum, like Carnage (swe), Blasphemy, Beherit albums (about 20 each), also newer ones like the first Falkenbach tape version for 15.
I guess when vinyl isn't enough some people need a kult tape library too...

If he has a list or wants to unload them all cheap I'd be interested. Like the other posters said though they don't sell for much.
I recently bought a few different tapes from Ebay. Unfortunately the Sodom lot I won had been stored in the guys basement and the covers and tapes were fucked up due to water damage.

They are invaluable to someone who has a cassette deck in their car at the very least.

how can people who dont play tapes be lazy? playing a tape is more lazy than playing a vinyl. So tape players are lazy ass fuckers, and records dont get chewed by crappy tape players.

Yeah, all you have to do is press play and sit back, and listen to the inferior sound quality.

Tapes have their place (mainly as the preferable format for demos), but I couldn't imagine ever listening to them regularly, let alone as the preferred format.

15 min demo on C-60 tape means another 15 minutes per side with silence.

and my remote control will fast forward the cassette and then the deck will aitomatically play the b-side. The tape will be taken out case and thrown into the machine.

My vinyl as to be taken out 2 sleeves and carefully placed onto the turn table , flipped carefully onto side b, then put away again carefully into the 2 sleeves. Tapes need no care.

I had some fairly rare tapes ("Worship Him", "Drawing Down the Moon", "Jilemnice Occultist") on the JL label. Took me a long time to sell them and only did when I dropped the prices down to under $10 each.

I usually ask for no more than $3 a tape, especially on those labels. I'd sell them for $1 to $2 in person though. Just cause there is no packing, leg work or PayPal fee involved.

Tapes really just have a nostalgic and aesthetic value to them. I guess an economic value too since they are cheap, so it doesn't cost much to build a nice collection of original stuff.

Aside from that, they are a pain in the ass. Having to rewind them, sound quality degrades over time and such...

For demos, they are perfect though.
