Going to LA next week and looking for some cool spots to check out. I've already seen the Danzig house. And the observatory.

Oh and good places for food?

Record shops:

Amoeba
Vacation Vinyl
Dr Strange Records

Maybe also Gimme Gimme and Permanent Records in Highland Park (they are right across the street from each other - while you're there, might as well check out Highland Park Brewery/Hermosillo)

Breweries:

Phantom Carriage in Carson (if you like listening to rock/punk/metal) and has that kind of "metal" atmosphere with skulls and horror movies playing every day in their theatre)

Food:

Ocha Classic (if you're into Thai)
Grill 'em all (if you're into burgers with loads of toppings - plus the metal atmosphere I suppose)
Wurstküche in LA or Venice (excellent food and beer selection)

I was going to say check out the Cha Cha Lounge but I don't think you'll be here when they have Born for Burning DJ'ing. They have Judas Priest night every 3rd Wednesday of the month and Metal Knights every 2nd Saturday.

Dark Realm Records in Downey is a fucking MUST hit. It's Sadistic Intent's record store, run by Rick and Bay from the band.

If you like Thai, gotta go to Sanamluang cafe and get the boat noodles. Best in my opinion.

If you go to Phantom Carriage(they have pretty good food too, especially the Philly cheese steak), Monkish and Smog City are both nearby and good. Beachwood isn't too far off in Long Beach, as is Stone's tasting room in Pasadena. If you're up Pasadena way, Mount Analog is worth a look if you like noise/experimental as well.

The Museum of Death is killer, definitely worth a look and right up the street from Amoeba.

There's also Dark Realm in Downey a short drive away. Worth it for the atmosphere alone and the Sadistic Intent guys are cool as fuck, too. Might get lucky and find a couple gems for regular prices. Picked up Lust's "Annihilation... Resurrection" for 15 bucks.

Just make sure to slot in an extra hour for Rick and Bay telling stories.

Hit up pretty much any taco truck you see for food haha.

Cha Cha lounge is a cool spot when it's not crowded. my favorite bar in LA however is smog cutter. run by old mean thai ladies. bring cash and buy drinks or they will kick you out.

Radiation Records in OC is great if you like punk. Also Grill Em All in Alhambra is a must hit if you like burgers/good beer.

Since you mentioned ramen in the other thread, Daikokuya in Little Tokyo is mandatory. Wait are long, but since it's in the middle of Little Tokyo, it'll be easy to kill time. Mumford brewing is actually a couple blocks away and definitely worth a visit.

Thanks for the tip, definitely keen on the brewery! I'd rather eat as much Mexican and American food while I can. I eat ramen every week here haha.
But it'd be interesting to see what Little Tokyo looks like.

Actually, I was an extra in a commercial for a New York ramen restaurant which was filmed here, of all places hehe

just starting to plan my trip, or get an idea of what I need to book etc, but can anyone recommend areas to stay in, and areas to avoid?
Of course I'll be looking to stay central, if possible, but what are the best areas to stay if I'll be heading all over the place?
Is public transport good? Are there areas I should avoid etc.
Thanks in advance for your tips.

I'd highly recommend staying in the Santa Monica / Venice area. You'll have a drive to Hollywood and downtown, as well as Downey, but the beaches are great there. You'll want to do Venice beach anyway.

And google the Black Castle, they used to have killer black/thrash/death shows. I heard they got shut down but maybe they just changed the name. I'll look too.

I second Dark Realm (lots of CDs) and Amoeba is mandatory.

avoid staying in santa monica/venice.
everything that's been mentioned is pretty much in LA, so just stay in downtown la, silverlake, highland park, alysian park, etc. check out air bnb if you can't find a chill hotel/motel

black castle is long gone.
metal shows usually go on at Complex, Union, Los Globos, and Five Star Bar.
