End of an Ear is the best record store in Austin. Other than that, I'm not sure there's much else in the way of "Heavy Metal" but you can check out http://showlistaustin.com/ for any gigs during your stay.

Lots of other cool shit to do here though in the way of hiking, swimming, EATING, drinking etc... so if you'll have access to a car (to get to some of the swimming holes) and/or wanna know my shortlist shoot me a PM.

I'd recommend a stop in Asheville if you have the time. It's full of hippies, oogles, and yuppies, as a warning, but the mountains are beautiful and full of awesome hiking spots, the beer is top-notch, and there are often some surprisingly good metal shows there, particularly at the Mothlight or the Odditorium. The Black Cloud is also a cool underground bar there with a metal edge, and Static Age and Harvest Records have nice if somewhat limited selections.
