It's so simple yet sounds so demented, makes me think of a zombie cripple taking lurching steps forwards

And of course, who could discount Shane Embury's distorted fuzztone from hell, best demonstrated on the song: Inner Incineration.

Exclamation Very Happy

Perfect choice! Total worship for Ildjarn and this has always been among my many favorite songs of his, that rhythm...your description is quite fitting. And then the weird as fuck riff that follows also makes this one of the most memorable Ildjarn tracks.

All of the '93 demo is a gem of a tape though..

Iron Maiden: basically all first 7 albums. Each of these albums have something where Steve Harris plays some great lines.
Metallica: Cliff era obviously, but gets highlighted the most at For Whom the Bell Tolls and Orion.
Sadus - Illusions/Swallowed in Black
Atheist - Piece of Time
Death - Human/Individual Thought Patterns
Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace album, but specially songs like Heaven Torn Asunder

Too much to pinpoint certain songs, so I'll put down some Great bass players instead:
Plenum of Virus/Audiopain
Skoll of Ulver/Ved Buens ende
Fenriz in Isengard/Dödheimsgard
The Great Righteous Destroyer of StarGazer/2000 other bands
Steve Cloutier and Colin Marston of Gorguts
Vidhall of Stilla
Whoever played bass in Howls of Ebb
Jim Schumacher of Brocas Helm

And of course the three inmortals Who inspired me to pick up the four-stringed axe of death: Butler - Harris - Burton. But if you want heavy duty bass lines, your goal should be Magma, and their Ja nick Top, Bernard Paganotti (his distorsion is KINGLY) and current basist Philipe Bussonett. All of them gods.

I was listening to Malokarpatan's 2017 full-length today and noticed that the opening track has some pretty groovy basslines (starting around 0:40): https://malokarpatan.bandcamp.com/track/nordkarpatenland

DODHEIMSGARD - Kronet Til Konge is still one of the best examples of it I reckon. 4 mins in and you know what you're about to get...En Krig å Seire just reinforces that

That Fluisterwoud album FMP put out had killer bass lines all through it as well

And obviously the masters Voivod, Necromantia and Venom are rife with bassriffage

But yes, all hail Mercyful Fate's the Oath. A perfect bassline from start to finish
