Melvins & Soundgarden play doom??? Confused The earliest (1969) and purest doom pioneers was, is and will be Black bloody Sabbath and then Saint Vitus! End of the story Wink for me at least. Recommendations? Hmmm, the finnish scene totally rules!!! Wooaaa!!! My top-3 of the genre includes: Skepticism, Tyranny & Disembowelment. Then Evoken, Mournful Congregation, Eyehategod, Hooded Menace, Austrasian Goat and many more. Also I always recommend My Dying Bride first EP "Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium" as a classic. In a sick way I could also recommend Paradise Lost debut LP "Lost Paradise"...

Oh, by no way did I mean Soundgarden pioneered Doom, I was just saying I prefer them over Melvins for bands from that era... Check out their song 4th of July, it's pretty gloomy...

Since Funeral Doom is being mentioned I think it's fair to say Thergothon takes the cake.

More Doom/Death but one of my current favorite releases is Evoken - A Caress of the Void. Some real heavy soul crushing music.

It's not like these guys do something freakishly new, but Baltimore based OAK surely know how to bake that damn Dooom cake. Top-notch downer somewhere between Burning Witch and diSEMBOWELMENT. Along the Sea grannies easily the very beAst current extreme Doom horde to me. Just love it!

Btw, looking forward to God Forsaken's Dismal Gleams... LP from 1992. Just bought it as the getting was good and I've never cared enough to check it out earlier. Is it worth to go for? All I can recall as some kind of underline from past reviews is like "As the Flower Withers" with a heavy Rock tone.
