This is a band that I've heard much talk about and makes me really curious. From what I have read they are experimental doom/drone. People into old school metal seem to dislike them for some reason but regardless the samples ive heard sound kinda cool. Any thoughts on this band and which albums are recommended for a new listener? If you dislike their style/sound, explain why!

Agreed! Together both Sunn and Boris toured Australia, and I caught the Brisbane gig. I found it to be quite an sensory experience, sometimes yer guts would just fuckin rumble from the noise they produced, a few of us were hoping they might hit the brown note. Also we had Attila doing vox which i guess was a lucky experience for the crowd. Nice bloke too for a stoner! Ha Ha. Definetly worth checkin out live even if ya not familiar with them, Flight of the Behemoth is a worth lookin into as well.

I like 00Void the best, but it's out of print

Try their first release- The Grimm Robes demos (total drone, Earth 2 worship), or Black One ( has Wrest and Malefic on it)

I think they get a lotta shit because they've become popular with the trendies. But who cares. All the crappy bands that are copying them now know they're poseurs. And Sunn sounds so much better than most of the new age ambient black metal stuff I've heard.

I'm not into this stuff at all. Their packaging always looks nice though.

I refer to this type of music as "the emperor's new clothes"
the fact that people buy (heavily) into this scene is funny to me.

I have respect for S. O'malley for his past work so I'm not going to talk shit. I do get the feeling that they're milking this for all its worth. I don't get it and don't want to.

As far as milking their recent popularity goes you could definitely make a case for it but I believe their intentions were genuine in the beginning.

I'm curious to know if people who dislike sunn simply dislike the genre in general or if it is something about sunn in particular that they find displeasing.

I've seen them live twice and those were pleasant experiences. One time was in an old movie theatre which still had the moviechairs in it, very relaxed to watch such a concert from a comfy chair. Second time was in Belgian's most famous small concert hall and that was ridiculously loud, it made my nose bone shake.
But on record, it's too monotome for me. I have White1 and that's basically all I need. Volume up, bass up, treble down.

hahaha, that is exactly why I posted this question on THIS forum and not there. I figured I could get a response from people who have similar musical taste.

I was lurking around the forum the other day and it seems like a bunch of emos who don't listen to metal at all...

Anyways I picked up the Black One CD and the Boris/SunnO))) split 3LP...we'll see if I like them, if not, theyll shortly be on my tradelist Razz
