Tankard (up to "The Morning After")

Never been such a big fan of Tankard. They're cool but don't rank up with the classics posted here for me

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill!
Also Darkness, Exumer, Samhain/Deathrow, Living Death, Sodom, old Necronomicon, Protector (though they always were borderline Death Metal to me).

Above list is no surprise so here are some good demos bands: Bloodvore, Antichrist, Deadlock, Evil Prophecy, Slaughterhammer, Hell (Destruction members) ...

I can't believe no-one's mentioned POISON this far?!? Shocked
Other than them, from the big 3 in Germany it's SODOM, followed by DESTRUCTION & KREATOR, being a very close match talking 'bout the latter 2. I don't have to emphasize on the fact, that I'm talking about the early (!) works of those, do I?

Also include the first Exumer and first Assassin LPs. And the first Helloween MLP + Walls Of Jericho LP. All close on par with the first Sodom/Destruction/Kreator LPs.

I'd put Helloween side by side with the traditional greats.

I never really got into Helloween. With Bands like Sodom,Destruction, Kreator, Assassin and all the great US Thrash Bands they just never fell into the equation for me.

Power of Darkness is cool but it doesn't match up to Kreator for me.

Kreator for me, I never liked Sodom or Destruction as much as their stuff, and of course Darkness, Deathrow and Vendetta deserve to be mentioned!

We all know the 80's was the prime for Thrash Metal. In the States we had bands like Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Megadeth, Vio-lence and countless others. But Germany also had it's Legends of Thrash. In this discussion, I decided not to do album vs. album, but a free for all of what you think is the best German Thrash band of the 80's.

My choice, and I might be in the minority on this, is Kreator.
In my opinion, every album they released in the 80's just ripped shit up.
From Endless Pain to Extreme Aggression, these Albums gave me plenty of Whiplash.

What will you choose?

I've never been a big fan of German thrash metal. Granted the first Sodom and first Kreator albums are timeless classics, everything else has no feeling for me. Seriously, everything Desaster did up to and including "Tyrants...." is far more appealing to me than anything released by the old German stock.

Sodom - 'In the Sign of Evil'
Destruction - 'Sentence of Death'
Iron Angel - 'Hellish Crossfire'
Exumer - 'Possessed by Fire'
Living Death - 'Vengeance of Hell'
Kreator - 'Endless Pain'
Poison - 'Into the Abyss'

These are my favorites.

Tankard is one of the bands I absolutely cannot stand. I hate, fucking HATE them! They make Germans look stupid. I'd spit at them if I saw them live.

Sodom - In the Sign of Evil

Poison - All their demos, pretty much crushed all the other bands
Protector - All their releases, one of the best and most underrated bands
Kreator - First 3 albums, it went downhill after that
Early Running Wild and Helloween, Minotaur, Violent Force, Paradox, Darkness, Vectom, Necronomicon, Tankard, Vendetta and Deathrow...there was just too many good bands coming out of Germany back then
