Was talking to a few friends tonight about which record from those days was the best. Everyone had different opinions on it, (all the same records just in various orders), hard to pin down. But Burzums debut, Immortals debut Darkthrones A Blaze and Mayhem were in everyones top. Always thought Gorgoroths Pentagram was fucking insane too. Burzum would be the best one for me. Maybe it was the time I heard it or whatever, but that record still has as much venom now as it did back then...

For me, the defining point of Norwegian black metal was "In the nightside eclipse" by Emperor. However, "Hvis lyset tar oss" is personally my favorite album from this scene/era.

My favorite record, and best in my opinion, from that period is probably "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" but "A Blaze..." is a close second; I agree with you though, "Pentagram" is a killer disc.

"Under a Funeral Moon" for me... it defined the Norwegian black metal style as far as I'm concerned... so many imitators but this one tops them all.

A Blaze in the Northern Sky is pretty definitive for me, although Pure Holocaust and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss rank pretty high too. So do Pentagram, ... Again Shall be, Dark Medieval Times and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

That narrows it down, doesn't it? Laughing

Personally, it would be In The Nightside Eclipse. That record defined black metal for me for quite a long time. The dark, mysterious, creepy atmosphere has never been matched for me.

First and foremost:

Darkthrone- Under a Funeral Moon

This record defined my teenage years and black metal for me for the longest era....I listened to practically just this record for months at a time occasionally listening to A Blaze... and Transilvanian Hunger with the releases below in between.

This was around the mid-late nineties when there was practically NOTHING coming out and black metal wasn't in every store back then here in the US aside from all the circus synth metal out there.

Others that come close:

Burzum- Self Titled
Emperor- In the Nightside Eclipse
Mayhem- De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Manes- Ned I Stellheten

For me there is nothing more boring than Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse except the 2 tracks written by Mortiis, compared to their 7" and MLP this album totally sucks.

Back to topic:
Burzum - Filosofem
Emperor - Emperor MLP
Darkthrone - Under a funeral Moon
Ildjarn - Strength and Anger
Zyklon B - Blood must be shed
