Pyha - The Haunted House:
"Rare is the record, black metal or otherwise, that evokes such intense emotion, that gives the listener chills. Beyond the blackness and the buzz, lies a record of impossible depth, full of emotion and passion. [...] Black metal record of the week? The year more likely. Perhaps maybe EVER."

Let's find some more over-hyped Aquarius Records review gems.

i gotta say, i'm friends with some of those guys, but if it's metal and they tend to like it, i tend to avoid it (as well as anything The Wire magazine likes.) most people associate me personally with this kind of "non-metal guy" scene, but i tend not to really like the kind of watered down shit most "non-metal" folks like.

it's not a dogma for me, but it tends to work out this way more often than not. i am not a fan of modern black metal, Sunn or most of that Southern Lord stuff for example.

Every single review of a black metal band says "buzzing black metal." Every time I read that I want to put my head through a wall.

Also, I have never successfully ordered from them, as every single time I request something it is out of stock.

In other words, I am not a fan.

Because they're indie rockers.

To indie rockers, black metal is like shoegaze with more distortion.

They don't fucking get it. Not their fault.

The word buzzing is present in every single review they write. as is the word weird. They only like "weird" metal.

Here's a good one (I bolded some of the more amusing portions):

Gorgeous and long overdue reissue of this out of print death metal classic from Australia. But don't let the words death metal throw you. We're not huge fans of straight up death metal either. But this is anything but straight up. In fact this is most definitely one of the weirdest, most damaged death metal records we have ever heard. From the same label that brought us the truly bizarre WOLD record from a few lists back, this is sort of along the same lines as the no-wave death metal of Gorguts' classic Obscura record, Portal takes traditional death metal and douses it in chaotic noise, twisting the arrangements into serpentine blurs, so fast and furious that it almost becomes a buzzy blurry drone, any faster and it would be a full on noise record, like Total or Skullflower playing death metal maybe. But then on top of that, replace all the standard downtuned DM riffs with impossibly manic squiggly Black Flag like riffing, sounding quite a bit like little metal spiders running up and down the neck of the guitars. Riffs and squeals of feedback shooting out like bolts of lightning, the drumming impossibly complex and blasting away beneath the churning ocean of writhing riffs, the vocals just another squirming barely discernible presence amidst the super distorted tangle of metallic riffing and blasting drums. Sometimes all the disparate sounds lock into weird metallic stuttering loops, buzzing and repeating hypnotically. And every once in a while the metal dissipates into gorgeous, gauzy, ambient drones, whirring and shimmering, like old machinery and black and white films, backwards loops, strange pitch shifts and gritty industrial percussion, a dizzying swirl of abstract sound, very reminiscent of Jeck or Basinski, but those respites are brief and are soon swallowed up by further waves of Portal's confounding crush.
Packaged in a gorgeous gatefold mini lp sleeve, with striking glossy filigree on the front cover, a printed inner sleeve and booklet with lyrics / liner notes.

Just about every review at AQ is overhyped, but the good thing is once you are used to their slant, the reviews can still give a good impression of what you will find on an album. It is a good enough resource to hear about some new releases if you take it with a grain of salt. I prefer the newsletter for the non metal stuff though really, since I hear about most of the metal stuff elsewhere.

Also, while their new stock is sometimes priced a bit high, if you get the chance to go in the store they have pretty great prices on used stuff and lots of eclectic music. Friendly staff too. I give them a lot of credit just for managing to keep a tiny niche store like that open in SF all these years, not to mention reviewing half the stuff they stock.

Sounds quite appealing to me, even in purely imaginative sense, I gotta give them that.

Speaking of Pyha: Did anybody give that piece of crap a listen? By far among the worst I've listened to in the last few weeks.

If you read the review they wrote of Alcest it mentions something about using it as a "gateway album" to get indie rockers into black metal. Razz

Without reading the thread, they're ALL over-hyped. Masterful marketing, I guess.

Ever knew a 'profesionnal' distro writing reviews and giving something they sell a bad review? It's not masterful marketing it's common sense.
