(Description by P. Lautensleger)
Finnish legends BLACK CRUCIFIXION return to the temporal realm with the reissue of THE FALLEN ONE OF FLAMES/SATANIC ZEITGEIST. Active in the legendary early 90s Finnish black metal scene, BLACK CRUCIFIXION shares many of the hallmarks of their Northern peers while establishing a distinct manifestation of their own black death art. A sinister atmosphere breathes through these arcane recordings, coupling plodding and torturous doom with disgusting bestial Satanic worship. Whispered vocals provide a truly unnerving aura with few parallels in black metal beyond their allies BEHERIT. These two cults share more than just an aesthetic sensibility, as these recordings feature SADOMATIC SLAUGHTER on drums. THE FALLEN ONE OF FLAMES demo is a stunning example of the irreplicable black magic conjured during the era in which it was recorded. SATANIC ZEITGEIST documents a live performance in Oulo in 1991, pairing their raw hymns with two covers of VENOM and SARCOFAGO. The lineage from these early gods to the era of BLACK CRUCIFIXION is clear to see, and they prove themselves to be more than worthy heirs to this canonized lineage. Requisite listening to those who worship BEHERIT, BARATHRUM, and all Northern cults who coat the mind in darkness. This is the first time these two recordings have been released together on one vinyl record. Comes on 180 gram heavy vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with an A4 booklet featuring liner notes, rare photos, and a gig flyer.
Black Crucifixion Bio
Forn, November 2002
IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS LIGHT. Regardless of the sound that Black Crucifixion created and the fact that we were probably the world’s most northern black metal act, the original idea of the band came together in a beautiful summer night, with the sun shining bright. We lived in the Arctic Circle, so during the summers the sun shines twenty-four hours a day.
It was year 1991 and it took me and Blacksoul only two weeks to book our first gig in a metal festival in the city of Oulu. The other bands playing were Impaled Nazarene, Demigod, Sentenced, Belial, Amorphis and Beherit. It is remarkable that in those days there was no distinction or borders between “death metal” or “black metal” scenes: we were part of the same movement, brothers in arms. Our line-up already had Sodomatic Slaughter on drums and he also played his farewell show with Beherit that night. Also another ex-Beherit member Wennström featured in our line-up as bass player. After the gig the merciless winter of Lapland hit us, endless day turned into the twenty hour a night darkness, so we crawled inside and started writing new and better songs. In December I booked us into a studio and by January we had finished The Fallen One of Flames -tape. Holocausto Vengeance of Beherit was not a member of the band, but a kind of a godfather who created the Intro and Outro for the tape. He also co-wrote the lyrics to Flowing Downwards and co-produced the sessions.
The emphasis of Beherit members to our band was anyway smaller than it might seem from a distance. Black Crucifixion was never a project of Beherit members. Beherit was just an inspiration and a help in the beginning. At the time I and Blacksoul were the core of Black Crucifixion and were never members of Beherit. Both of the bands were ahead of time, pioneers in search for the darkness in music. By the time Darkthrone released their black metal debut A Blaze in the Northern Sky , both Beherit and Black Crucifixion were already heading forwards. That is not to say that In the Shadow of the Horns would not be one of my favourite black metal songs and Darkthrone a mighty band. But the “true black metal” came to an end as hundreds and hundreds of bands started painting their faces and wearing black jeans. So we did no more. Were we true black metal? I’d say that we were true as fuck. And fake as hell. Fake because we surely were not the devils that we portrayed ourselves as. And true because this music came from our very hearts. And when our heart told us to evolve musically, we did and the result could be heard on the Promethean Gift -album. The Fallen One of Flames is metal from its blackest era, conceived in northern frost and darkness. We enjoyed the music and burned no churches. I hope you’ll do the same.
